IGPA Faculty Coffee – The Relationship Between Multi-Jurisdictional Employment Policies and Food Insecurity

IGPA will be hosting Betsy Porter to speak about her IGPA Research Scholar Initiative: The relationship between multi-jurisdictional employment policies and food insecurity.

Betsy Porter, JD is a Clinical Assistant Professor in Health Policy and Administration at the UIC School of Public Health. Betsy is an attorney, licensed in the state of Illinois, who has spent the past 10+ years focused on legal research. In this role, Betsy has developed an expertise in policy surveillance and legal epidemiology – the practice of collecting, compiling, and evaluating state and local policies to determine their potential impact on public health. In this role, she has become a content-matter expert in school nutrition and wellness and currently leads the compilation of the National Cancer Institute’s Classification of Laws Associated with School Students database (available at class.cancer.gov).

Recent work also includes state and local policies that encompass a broad view of employment regulations with the potential to impact social determinants of health as well as state laws that address lung cancer and lung cancer screening guidelines. Betsy is an affiliate faculty within the UIC School of Law and a University of Illinois Cancer Center Research Program Member.
